Question New Monk needs 2nd Profession...

HI All --

I am building a new monk for the first time, and trying to figure out what a good 2nd profession would be to put on him. I am currently in Factions, on Newbie island running through the professions. In reading the threads on this forum and others that Mesmer & Elementalist are a common 2nd profession on monks, and I am not sure why given the state of Mesmers these days, although I can see why Elementalist might be popular (with concerns about energy issues). So, I was thinking about putting Ritualist in as the 2ndary for my monk, it looks to me like the Rit has lots of overlap with the Monk, and would be a good synergy with a monk. I am interested in hearing thoughtful reason why I should or should not do that, and why another profession might be better as a secondary for a Monk.

Thanks in advance,
Wyler.

Mesmer is a good profession for PvE monking. Inspiration energy skills help to keep you spamming in tough situations.

Having just gone through evaluating several new builds, I noted the following information regarding secondaries:

Assassin: A couple of good "get away" spells. Most useful to me in AB battles but not very useful in PvsE.

Elemental: GoLE is the "energy bonus" you get. Useful in both AB and PvsE.

Mesmer: My favorite because of the variety of spells you can "play with" as well as the more useful energy management spells. Very versatile.

Keep in mind that I've always played a "Boon Prot" monk. A "heal" monk doesn't seem to need as much energy management. Apparently Night Fall has recked havoc with the "old" school monks such as myself due to the plethora of new more powerful spells(Healer's Boon, etc.) I'm still evaluating my builds so take all of the above with a gain of salt!

Hopefully one of the newer, more informed monks in this forum will give you some better(current) information.

To be perfectly honest... I find Ritualist is a rather poor monk secondary.

The self-defense stuff is energy and attribute intensive, especially compared to what monks already have - compare Weapon of Warding to (the soon-to-be-buffed) Guardian, or something like Shield Bash or Return.

As for energy management... There's a couple of elite Channeling bits.
Signet of Spirits sucks, Offering of Spirit isn't much better.
Stick to the ele's Glyph or the Mes' Channeling.

And Restoration Magic is just Healing Prayers, except with conditionality strewn all over the place. And it don't work with Divine Favor.
As, in, it sucks. Harder than Healing Prayers does.

To be honest, if you like PvE playing then you should choose Mesmer, but if you like Farming and other you should choose Dervish. Well its up to you, but i would take Mesmer for the beginning, because if you run out of energy, then you can take Energy Tap or something to get more energy!

Well, its up to you!

Hi All --

You have convinced me that Mesmer is they way to go.This brings me to the followup question of creating a decent build for a lvl 10 m/Me in factions for PvE play. Suggestions?

Wyler.

/anything cos they all have there ups and downs and theres a secondary changer only 4-5 missions in so its not to long to wait if you dislike that /mes

just go what you can at the moment mix RoF with orsiron your only leave 10 so theres not that much open to you, and when you do get to capping skills go Blessed light, with its buff its now a decent move again, even tho it never changed it just fell out of favor. that or go over to elona and cap LoD

Huh?
You're level 10. HEALING BREEZE works at level 10.

At lower levels, just try and get into the rythm of monking - learning when to heal someone, when to prot, and how to not waste energy.

Don't worry about builds untill you're 20 with max attribute points, and the full selection of skills at Kaineng Centre available to you.

Mem: Inspiration Line
A: Shadow steps
Rt: Not useful, focus on monk attribute would be better
